Counting Days Between Two Dates With a Date Calculator
The first mode answers one question: how much time separates two points on the calendar? You enter a start date and an end date, and the tool reports the days between two dates, plus the same span broken into weeks, months and years. Many people search for this as a date to date calculator, a date range calculator, or a day counter, and each one is the same arithmetic underneath, measuring a time span between two points: subtract one calendar position from the other and let the tool absorb every uneven month and leap day, including any quirk at the calendar boundaries between months and years. The inflation calculator online is free to use with no sign-up, and works on desktop and mobile.
Start date and end date
The start date is the earlier day and the end date is the later one. If you enter them in reverse, a good tool simply swaps them so you still get a positive result. The date difference is the number of midnights crossed, in whichever unit you choose, between the two, which means that by default the start day itself is not counted.
The include end day option
Whether the last day is part of the count depends on what you are measuring. A lease that runs from the 1st through the 30th covers 30 days of occupancy, yet plain subtraction gives 29. Ticking the include end day box adds 1 to the total, and that single choice is the most common reason two tools disagree by a day.
\(\text{Days between} = \text{End date} - \text{Start date} \;(+\,1 \text{ if the end day is included})\)
Weeks, months and years breakdown
Consider why the breakdown matters in practice: a project manager reading "262 days" has to divide by seven in their head to judge how many sprints fit, while "37 weeks and 3 days" answers that at a glance. A contractor billing monthly cares about the 8 full months, and a manager reporting to a board wants the whole span in one phrase.
Raw days are precise but hard to picture, so the calculator also expresses the span as weeks, months and years. Whole years come off first, then whole months, then the remaining days, and the leftover is divided into weeks. Because months differ in length, "one month" is a calendar step rather than a fixed 30 days.
Worked example: 17 February to 6 November 2026
Say a landscaping crew starts a job on Tuesday, 17 February 2026 and the final inspection is booked for Friday, 6 November 2026. Entering those two dates gives 262 days, or 263 days once the end day is included. In calendar terms that is 8 months and 20 days, or 37 weeks and 3 days. The table shows where the 262 days come from, month by month.

Add or Subtract Days From Any Date
The second mode works in the opposite direction. Instead of two dates, you give one start date and a duration, then choose whether to add or subtract it. This add to or subtract from a date function is how you find a due date, a notice deadline or a day in the past, and it returns a single calendar date along with the weekday it falls on. The savings calculator uses the same plain-English approach, so you can compare results side by side.
Add days to a date
To add days, move forward on the calendar and roll over the month or year boundary whenever you run out of days. Adding 90 days to 19 August 2026 lands on Tuesday, 17 November 2026. You can also add weeks, months or years on their own or combined, which is handy for a 6-month probation period or a 2-year warranty, or for laying out a schedule of milestones from a single kickoff date.
Subtract days from a date
To subtract days, step backward instead. Taking 90 days off 19 August 2026 gives Thursday, 21 May 2026. People use this to work out a start of coverage, an invoice's original issue date, or the last day to give notice before a fixed event.
Adding or subtracting 90 days from 19 August 2026.
Day of the week for the result
Every add to or subtract from a date result also names the day of the week it lands on, which matters because a deadline that lands on a Sunday is rarely useful, and scheduling around it saves a lot of rework. If the weekday is wrong for your purpose, nudge the number up or down and run the add or subtract days step again.
Using a Day Counter to Find a Lease Notice Deadline
On Wednesday, 4 November 2026, Marisol Okafor rereads her apartment lease. It ends on 28 February 2027, and clause 14 says a non-renewal notice must reach the landlord at least 60 days before the end date. She wants the last safe day to send it, not a guess. Next, open the discount calculator and enter your own details to see an estimate in seconds.
She opens the calculator's add or subtract section, enters 28 February 2027 as the start date, picks Subtract, types 60 in the days field and clicks the Calculate button. The result, the date that falls 60 days before the lease ends, reads Wednesday, 30 December 2026.
Two details make her stop. The lease says "at least 60 days before," and counting the end date itself would make the cutoff 29 December, so she tests the stricter reading by subtracting 61 days: Tuesday, 29 December 2026. The landlord's office also closes for the holiday week, and the letter goes by certified mail, which she knows can take three business days.
Cutoff by the plain reading: Wednesday, 30 December 2026.
Cutoff by the stricter reading: Tuesday, 29 December 2026.
Days from today to the stricter cutoff: 55, found by switching to the days-between mode with 4 November 2026 as the start date and 29 December as the end date.
Because 29 December is a Tuesday and mail needs three business days, she decides to post the letter on Monday, 21 December 2026, giving a full week of buffer on top of the stricter cutoff. That date goes in her phone calendar with a reminder on the 18th, and the stricter result, not the plain one, is the number she writes on the lease folder.
Date Math and Leap Years: Why Counting by Hand Fails
Doing date math by hand looks easy until a month boundary appears. The uneven month lengths and the extra day in February are exactly what a free date calculator handles for you, and they are the reason manually counting across several months so often produces an off-by-one mistake. Date arithmetic is really a chain of small exceptions rather than one clean rule.
Leap year rules
A leap year adds February 29, the leap day, to keep the calendar aligned with the solar year. The rule has three steps: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, unless it is also divisible by 100, in which case it is not, unless it is divisible by 400, in which case it is again. So century years such as 2100 are skipped, while 2400 counts. The table checks four years.

The practical effect shows up in long spans. From 17 February 2026 to 29 February 2028 is 742 days, because the leap day at the end is real, whereas a rough "365 times 2 plus 12" would miss it.
Days in each month
The days in each month follow the familiar rhyme: April, June, September and November have 30, February has 28 (29 in a leap year), and every other month has 31. These uneven month lengths are the main reason a quick estimate of "about 30 days per month" drifts away from the true figure.
Gregorian Calendar History Behind Every Date Calculation
Every result here follows the Gregorian calendar, the civil calendar used almost everywhere today. It replaced the Julian calendar, which Julius Caesar introduced in 46 BC with a leap day every fourth year. That rule was slightly too generous, and by 1582 the calendar had slipped about 10 days against the equinoxes. Pope Gregory XIII fixed it by skipping from 4 October straight to 15 October and by dropping leap years in century years not divisible by 400. The new rule is accurate to roughly one day in 3,000 years of the mean solar year.
Adoption was gradual, so dates before 1582 may not match the calendar in force at the time and should be treated as approximate. The roman calendar it grew out of was tied to the moon and drifted against the astronomical seasons, which is why the reforms mattered. Religious and cultural calendars still run alongside it: the Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar with 354 days in a year, but a standard date calculator assumes Gregorian dates throughout.
Where a Day Count Calculator Gets Used
A day count calculator earns its place wherever a date drives a decision. The common cases fall into a short list:
Project deadlines and every milestone along the way: add a lead time to a kickoff date to find the due date.
Contract and lease terms: measure the duration, or find an expiration date from the signing date plus the term.
Event planning: count days until a wedding, conference or product launch.
Payroll and HR: check hire dates against review dates, or find the end of a probation period.
Legal deadlines: compute notice periods or a statute of limitations cutoff from a triggering event.
Personal planning: find the time until a birthday, anniversary, vacation or retirement date, or work out gestational age.
If you only want the days between dates, or to count days for a trip or a streak, the basic mode is enough. For a legal or financial deadline, confirm the result with the relevant authority, since the rules for how a period is counted differ by jurisdiction.
Calendar Days, Business Days and Holidays
The count described so far uses calendar days, so weekends and holidays are all included. That is correct for lease terms and age, but not for shipping estimates or payroll, which usually run on working days.
Business days versus calendar days
For the 262-day span above, only 188 business days fall on a weekday, because weekends take out the other 74. If your deadline is written in business days, a duration calculator that skips Saturdays and Sundays gives a very different date than adding the same number as calendar days.
Weekends remove 74 of the 262 calendar days, leaving 188 business days.
Federal holidays
Holidays complicate things further. In the United States, federal holidays are either fixed holidays, like New Year's Day on January 1, or floating, like a floating Monday on the third Monday of January or the fourth Thursday of November. Private employers choose which ones they observe, and some pay extra holiday pay for working them, so a tool that skips holidays must let you edit the list. This calculator counts calendar days and does not skip any holiday, so subtract the ones you observe from the result yourself.
Double-checking a day difference calculator result
Before relying on a day difference calculator's output, sanity-check it with a rough estimate. Round the span to the nearest month, multiply by about 30, and compare: 8 months and 20 days is roughly 260 days, which agrees with the 262 returned. If the two numbers are far apart, one of the dates was probably typed in the wrong order, or the year was entered incorrectly. Checking takes ten seconds and prevents the kind of missed deadline that a single transposed digit can cause.
Time zones and saved inputs in a date range calculator
The tool reads dates from your browser's local settings, so for anything crossing a time zone, double-check the result against a reference source. Many calculators also keep your entries in local browser storage so you can return and continue where you left off.
Date Calculator questions
How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Choose the days between two dates mode, enter a start date and an end date, then click Calculate. The result counts every calendar day between them, handling leap years and uneven month lengths automatically.
Does the end date count as a day?
Not by default: the count is the number of days crossed between the two dates. Tick Include end day to add 1 so both the first and last day are counted, which suits leases, stays and event windows.
How do I add or subtract days from a date?
Switch to the add or subtract mode, enter a start date, choose Add or Subtract, then type the years, months, weeks and days. The result shows the new date and the day of the week it falls on.
Does the date calculator handle leap years?
Yes. A year divisible by 4 is a leap year unless it is divisible by 100 and not by 400, so 2028 and 2400 include February 29 while 2100 does not.
What is the difference between calendar days and business days?
Calendar days include every day, weekends and holidays. Business days skip Saturdays and Sundays and, optionally, US federal holidays, so the same span gives a smaller number.
Which US federal holidays are skipped?
When enabled, the business-day count skips New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
What happens when adding a month to a date like January 31?
The result keeps the same day of the month where it exists and otherwise uses the last day of the shorter month, so January 31 plus 1 month is February 28 (29 in a leap year).
Are dates before 1582 accurate?
They follow the modern Gregorian calendar rules, so dates before the 1582 reform may differ from the calendar actually in use at the time.
